Friday, 31st of March, is the anniversary of Bucha.

I would never want that my beautiful childhood town Bucha to be know as the mass murder of civilians and prisoners of war by the Russian Armed Forces.

To the world, these people are known as the “Bucha bodies,”

For me, these are our relatives, our friends, people we know.

▶️ During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, heavy fighting took place in Bucha as part of the Kyiv offensive, resulting in severe Russian losses.

The city was captured by Russian forces on 27 February

Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk announced the recapture of Bucha by Ukrainian forces on 31 March 2022.

A few days after the recapture, on 2 April 2022, news reports and videos emerged showing streets in Bucha covered with the bodies of men dressed in civilian clothes. Some of those found had their hands tied. Among those killed were women and children. There was also evidence that Russian soldiers had systemically tortured, mutilated and executed many civilians in the basement of a summer camp.

During the occupation, the Russian army committed more than 9,000 war crimes in the Bucha district of Kyiv region, and more than 1,700 civilians were killed, including about 700 in Bucha.

Today is Taras Shevchenko Birthday, 9 March 1814 – 10 March 1861.

He was a Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, public and political figure, folklorist and ethnographer. His literary heritage is regarded to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and, to a large extent, the modern Ukrainian language, though this is different from the language of his poems. Shevchenko is also known for his many masterpieces as a painter and an illustrator.

Like New Mexico, Ukraine is home of freedom, community, and art.

Join the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience (AFMX) and Filmmakers for Ukraine in this first-ever event bringing the Ukrainian and New Mexican film communities together to raise awareness and funds for Ukrainian filmmakers and others in Ukraine facing dire situations.

Filmmakers for Ukraine, a global group of filmmakers volunteering their time, prioritizes helping filmmakers, their families and disadvantaged groups in Ukraine who otherwise may not receive the urgent help they need. Proceeds from your ticket purchase will provide critical aid to get them through the cold winter months and beyond.

For just $20, you’ll get to see a hand-curated block of short films, and Sundance 2022 winner and Academy Award Nominated documentary, A House Made of Splinters, which Variety calls “an affecting diary of life continuing in the worst of circumstances.”

Empathy for Ukraine Initiative

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS in New Mexico.

Empathy for Ukraine seeks volunteers who can forward translated first-person accounts of the invasion of Ukraine to their Representatives and Senators through “contact us” forms on their legislative websites. Our initiative already has over 150 volunteers and in 2022 we have sent 15,000 letters to the members of the US Congress. But we don’t have volunteers in New Mexico. Please join us!
